Personal Protective Equipment
- Personal protective equipment should be used only for emergency or temporary situations. It is not a substitute for administrative and engineering controls
- All personnel must be properly trained in the use of protective equipment
- Normal protective equipment where exposure is not expected:
- Chemical goggles
- Hard hats and steel-toed rubber boots
- Safety showers and eye wash stations are to be located in the immediate working area
- Respiratory protection equipment available for escape
Additional protective equipment where potential for exposure is high:
Respiratory Protection
- Only use National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Certified respirators
- Fitted full face piece cartridge type respirators with organic vapor (black) cartridge or organic vapor/acid combination (yellow) cartridge for short term exposure or low concentration
- Use supplied-air or self-contained positive pressure breathing apparatus for longer term or higher concentrations, or unknown concentrations
- All personnel must be medically approved to wear respiratory protection (OSHA regulation 1910.134)
Protective Clothing
- Neoprene or butyl rubber is preferred for chemical suits, boots, and gloves
- Do not wear leather articles
- Leather articles cannot be decontaminated and must be cut up and burned
- Have contaminated clothing properly laundered before re-use
- Segregate storage of street clothes and work clothes
